This Week’s Share-- The “addition” of happiness!
When the Israelites sowed their crops, they would always leave a portion of the harvest at the four corners of the field nearest the roadside. After learning the reason from the locals, curious foreign visitors were invariably deeply moved by the Jewish people’s spirit of gratitude.
In the eyes of the Israelites, the Jewish people’s present prosperity, after enduring so many trials and tribulations, is entirely due to God’s grace. Out of gratitude and in order to repay God, while also offering sustenance to impoverished travelers passing through who have no food, thus sparing them the suffering of hunger brought on by poverty or long journeys, they express their thankfulness by setting aside the gleanings from the corners of their fields. Whenever the need arises, anyone may come and harvest these corner crops, and no one will question or object.
In Israel, even worn-out clothes destined for disposal are first washed and neatly folded, then respectfully placed in the trash bin so that those living in poverty can take them and wear them again.
I remember a famous person once said: When you’re confident, share that confidence with those around you; when you’re happy, extend that happiness to those who have once helped you; when you’re joyful, pass on some of that joy to those who quietly watch over you; when you succeed, offer a bit of inspiration to those still struggling along the way; and when you feel proud, spare some of that pride for those who are downcast. The crops of gratitude teach us that these positive spiritual qualities in life do not diminish with giving; on the contrary, they grow richer through it.
Years have been momentous, with flowers blooming and falling. If we liken life to a piece of land, then each of us should set aside some space for “crops.” With just a grateful heart, we can sow the seeds of love, and happiness will begin to grow.
